The Xbox is a sixth generation video game console produced by Microsoft Corporation. It was Microsoft's first foray into the gaming console market, and competed directly with Sony's PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo GameCube. It was released on November 15, 2001 in North America, February 22, 2002 in Japan, and March 14, 2002 in Europe and Australia. It is the predecessor to Microsoft's Xbox 360 console.

Production costs[]

According to iSupply, initial production costs for the Xbox was $323 for the package.[1] It was estimated that Microsoft lost between $100 and $125 per console sold. It budgeted $500 million to market the new console.The business of culture p.84

Xbox launch[]

Microsoft sold 550,000 units of hardware in its first week of release in 2001.[2]

Microsoft's Xbox division was only profitable in one financial quarter, the quarter in which Halo 2 was released.[3]
