Tetris is a puzzle game franchise created by Alexey Pajitnov in the Soviet Union and first commercialized for computers in 1988. It was popularized worldwide by Nintendo's Game Boy and NES releases in 1989. The franchise is currently owned by The Tetris Company, founded in the United States by Pajitnov and Henk Rogers in 1996.
The franchise has sold more than 500 million units worldwide,[1] including 70 million physical sales and more than 400 million paid mobile downloads.[2] This makes it the best-selling puzzle game franchise, and the overall second best-selling game franchise after Mario. In terms of revenue, the franchise is estimated to have grossed more than $2 billion across all platforms.
