Sonic the Hedgehog, or just Sonic, is Sega's biggest franchise. The first game in the franchise was released on June 23, 1991. Since then, Sonic has become one of the world's best-known video game characters, along with Mario, Pac-Man, and Pikachu.

It is one of the best selling franchises. It has shifted over 1.14 billion units, including approximately 178 million software sales and over 900 million free-to-play mobile downloads.[1][2][3] In terms of gross revenue, the franchise has grossed nearly $10 billion in lifetime revenue across all media, including more than $7 billion in video game revenue. The original Sonic the Hedgehog is also one of the best selling games worldwide.
