Video Game Sales Wiki

This the NPD data for September 2014, which covers the sales for United States August 31 through October 4. The gaming industry generated $1.1 billion[1]. This month marked the debut of Destiny.

Overall[]

A total of $432.7 million for Hardware. This is up 136% from 2013. For software, there was a total of $481.2 million, down 36% from from 2013. There was an additional $20.4 million for PC retail sales. For Accessories, there was a total of $189.5 million, up 33% from 2013.

In terms of hardware, the console hardware sales grew by 200% from last year due to the presence of the new systems. The Playstation 4 outperformed the Xbox One again, partially due to the Destiny bundle, with sales nearly tripling August 2014 sales. Nintendo announced the 3DS sold 140,000 for the month, up 55% from August and the Wii U had sold 50% better than August.

In terms of software, Destiny does not match Grand Theft Auto V's launch but, it became the best selling game of the year with just September sales and became the best launch month for any new IP. If both year's top games were removed, software sales of the top ten would have increased from last year as well. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is also a big launch that it landed at No. 4 despite only being on sale for 2 days. When including digital, it sold over 705,000 copies in the tracking period according to Nintendo. The launch of the Sims 4 help boost PC physical sales, with sales up by over 40% over last September.
