This the NPD data for May 2015, which covers the sales for May 3 through May 30, 2015 in the United States. The gaming industry generated $ 507.6million[1].

Overall[]

A total of $153.6 million for Hardware. This is down 18% from 2014. For software, there was a total of $204.7 million, down 25% from 2014. There was also $7.6 million in PC retail software, down from last year. For Accessories, there was a total of $149.3 million, up 20% from 2014.

In terms of hardware, the drop was driven by the decline in the last generation hardware with current generation consoles relatively stable. The Playstation 4 continued to be the top-selling console for the month. Despite lagging behind the Playstation 4, Microsoft promoted the Xbox One's growth and strong Xbox Live engagement with Xbox One sales up 81% from last May. In year-to-date, the eighth generation consoles are flat, seventh generation consoles are down 45% while portables are up 41%.

In terms of software, software declined with weaker launched compared to May 2014 with new launches declining by 55%. Catalog sales did increase by 3%. The Witcher 3 was the big winner with the best launch on eighth generation hardware the RPG super genre. Splatoon is the only other new game on the list which is a strong debut for a new property despite only a couple days of tracking. If the software was on a SKU basis, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster would have made the top 10.
