This the NPD data for March 2021, which covers the sales for United States. The gaming industry generated $5.608 billion[1].

Overall[]

A total of $680 million for Hardware. This is up 47% from 2020. For video game content, there was a total of $4.628 billion, up 14% from from 2020. For Accessories, there was a total of $300 million, up 26% from 2020.

In terms of hardware, this was the highest March, beating the record of $552 million set in 2008. The Switch is the lead platform in both units and dollar sales. However, the Playstation 5 is still maintaining its record of fastest-selling platform in terms of units and dollar sales, now for five months on the market. Both the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series are selling nearly every console they make. The accessories also achieve March record with the leading accessory being the whitePS5 DualSense Wireless Controller.

In terms of software, the big release of the month is Monster Hunter Rise. It achieved second place behind Call of Duty and has the second highest lifetime sales of a Monster Hunter game, only behind World. The new original cooperative shooter Outriders achieved a strong debut in third place for the month and tenth for the year. Crash Bandicoot 4 returned to the charts due to the launch of the Switch version. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe maintained its presence in the top 10 and is the best selling racing game in US history. Pokémon games are now counted as a single title, instead of by version, which raised Sword and Shield into the top rankings after missing in February.
