This the NPD data for March 2020, which covers the sales for United States. The gaming industry generated $1.597 billion. This was the first month impacted directly by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the biggest March since 2008.

Overall

A total of $461 million for Hardware. This is up 63% from 2019. For software, there was a total of $739 million, up 34% from from 2019. For Accessories, there was a total of $397 million, up 12% from 2019.

In terms of hardware, the Nintendo Switch achieved an all-time record for March unit sales and both the Playstation 4 and Xbox One achieved 25% higher sales year over year. In terms of software, the biggest success was Animal Crossing: New Horizons that despite the NPD only tracking physical sales, it became the second best selling game of the year this far. It also had the third-best launch month for any Nintendo published game, only behind Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. With launch sales alone, it exceeded the lifetime sales of every other Animal Crossing title, making it the best-selling title in the franchise. MLB: The Show 20 is the other big new game of the month, becoming the fastest selling game in the franchise by a significant amount. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare also achieved a March high for the franchise, beating March 2010.
