This the NPD data for March 2016, which covers the sales of video games for United States. The gaming industry generated $964.1 million[1].


A total of $253.2 million for Hardware. This is down 19% from March 2015. For game software, there was a total of $425.8 million, up 8% from 2015. For accessories, there was a total of 285.1 million, up 9% from 2015.

Hardware was down year over year mainly due to the decline of the previous generation hardware and handhelds and the cheaper revisions of the current generation hardware. Unit sales declined by 17%. The Playstation 4 continued to be the top-selling console.

Software was driven the launch of several new titles. Collectively, new titles' overall sales grew by 26% over last March's titles. Tom Clancy's The Division had the best launch sales to date for the series, selling 40% more than the previous best-selling Tom Clancy title, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 when adjusting for number of days in month.

In 2024, Circana updated their historical data and released updated top 20 charts for each month from 2010 through 2023. This includes digital revenue from members of the Digital Leader Panel, including members that joined later.[2]
