This the NPD data for January 2016, which covers the sales for United States. The gaming industry generated $605.2 million[1].

Overall[]

A total of $157 million for Hardware. This is down 15% from January 2015. For Accessories, there was a total of $235.5 million, up 15% from 2015. For game software, there was a total of $212.7 million, down 10% from 2015.

The Playstation 4 continued to be the top-selling console and the platform with the most software sales, Sales for both were up year over year. Sales of previous generation consoles were 4%, declining from 16% in 2015.

Notable Details[]

The only new game that reached the charts this month was LEGO: Marvel Avengers. This was the first entry that sold better on Playstation than Xbox in launch. Sales were 200% lower than Dying Light's launch last January. If games were ranked on a SKU basis, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam would have ranked No. 10.

2024 Update[]

In 2024, Circana updated their historical data and released updated top 20 charts for each month from 2010 through 2023. This includes digital revenue from members of the Digital Leader Panel, including members that joined later.[2]
