This the NPD data for December 2020, which covers the sales for United States. The gaming industry generated $7.702 billion.

Overall

A total of $1.350 billion for Hardware. This is up 38% from 2019. For video game content, there was a total of $5.806 billion, up 23% from from 2019. For Accessories, there was a total of $546 million, up 15% from 2019.

In terms of hardware, the Nintendo Switch leads by units and dollar sales. The second best-selling was the Playstation 5 by dollar sales and the Playstation 4 by units.

In terms of software, Nintendo represents the half the top 20 with the highest being Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Animal Crossing achieved the highest dollar sales for a Nintendo game in a calendar year since Wii Fit Plus. Cyberpunk 2077 is the biggest launch of the month, hitting the second highest game of the month, even though CD Projekt Red does not disclose their digital sales. Call of Duty continue to hold the top position. Call of Duty continues to be the best-selling franchise for the 12th consecutive year.
