This the NPD data for August 2022, which covers the sales for United States. The gaming industry generated $4.104 billion.

Overall

A total of $375 million for Hardware. This is up 14% from 2021. For video game content, there was a total of $3.591 billion, down 6% from from 2021. For Accessories, there was a total of $138 million, down 18% from 2021.

In terms of hardware, the Playstation 5 took the lead for both units and dollar sales. Like in July, both the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series platforms are up by double-digit percentage when compared to a year ago. The Switch is second for units and third in dollar sales.

In terms of software, Madden NFL 23 topped the month, continuing the series trend of being rank 1 for each launch of the series for the past 23 years. Marvel's Spider-Man, Horizon Forbidden West and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim all return to the top 20 with Marvel's Spider-Man rising to position 3 from position 84 due to the PC port. The mobile market still took a hit this month dropping by 10% year-over-year though not as bad as July
