This the NPD data for August 2015, which covers the sales for August 2 through August 29 in the United States. The gaming industry generated $548 million[1].

Overall[]

A total of $190.5 million for Hardware. This is down 2% from 2014. For software, there was a total of $207.9 million, down 10% from 2014. There is $5.1 million for PC retail sales. For Accessories, there was a total of $149.6 million, up 12% from 2014.

In terms of hardware, the Playstation 4 was the lead platform though the Xbox One sales were up 26% over 2014. There was a sharp decline for seventh generation sales. Bundles were the predominant way to get consoles with 93% of August's unit sales, compared to 41% in August 2014. Portables grew 4% over last year.

In terms of software, Madden NFL topped the chart continuing the series trend to debut at 1st in its launch month. Madden is the third best selling franchise according to NPD. New generation sales were up 34% but, it couldn't offset the 51% decline from the 7th generation sales or the 35% drop for portables. New launches declined by 16%.
