This the NPD data for August 2014, which covers the sales for United States for August 3 - August 30. The gaming industry generated $561 million[1].
Overall[]
A total of $196.2 million for Hardware. This is up 116% from 2013. For software, there was a total of $231.6 million, down 21% from from 2013. There was a total of 7.1 million from retail PC software. For Accessories, there was a total of $133.5 million, down 2% from 2013.
In terms of hardware, revenue was massively up from last year with strong eighth generation hardware, representing 70% of the revenue. When comparing to the first ten months, the PS4 and Xbox One are up 70% from their combined predecessors. PlayStation 4 was No. 1 in hardware sales for the eighth consecutive month and the cumulative leader for current generation hardware. Xbox One sales still doubled July, primarily due to the Madden NFL bundle.
In terms of software, Madden NFL tops its month of release again, with growth over Madden NFL 25. New launches however, dropped by 41% with the lack of releases comparable to Saints Row and Disney Infinity. Additionally, declines in seventh generation software dragged down overall revenue. Multiplatform software performed nearly universally better on PS4 than the Xbox One with the exception of Call of Duty.
