Overview[]
In terms of software, Call of Duty returns to the top position with Advanced Warfare. Additionally, Call of Duty: Ghosts stayed in the top 10 for year though declining from 2012's Black Ops 2. The big new property of the year, Destiny, managed to reach No. 3 (No. 2 when going by revenue). Grand Theft Auto V's second year was a relative decline but, it still makes the top 5 for the year. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U ranks at No. 6, becoming the highest platform exclusive with sales driven by the 3DS version. Watch_Dogs also has a strong debut year at No. 8.
In terms of hardware, sales were largely driven by the new consoles with both consoles selling over 4 million. The Playstation 4 maintains its lead from launch with Xbox One not too far behind. After 14 months on the market, the combined sales of these platforms exceed the launch-aligned total of their predecessors by 65%. The 3DS is third though notably down from 2013. The Wii U had its best year yet but, it is still 4th of the current generation devices.
