The total United States video game industry in 2013 was estimated by NPD sales figures to be $12.97 billion down 2% from 2012.[1] This year marks the launch of Eighth generation platforms, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as the launch of Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto V is the biggest game of the year, becoming the first game outside of the Call of Duty series to top the software charts since 2008 with Wii Play. After 4 months of sales, it has almost surpassed Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, making it nearly the best selling game in the franchise.

In terms of hardware, the Nintendo 3DS was top-selling platform for the year.The Xbox 360 comes in second with the Playstation 3 comes in the third. The new consoles sold well for only two months on the market. The Playstation 4 is leading of the two but, the Xbox One is close behind.

2024 Update[]

In January 2024, Circana published revised rankings for the year based on revenue. It does include digital for members of the Digital Leader Panel, including companies such as Bethesda and Sony, which were not members at the time.[2]
