Fire Emblem is a strategy role-playing game franchise developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo . The first game released in 1990 on the Nintendo Famicom (Nintendo Entertainment System). The games revolve around tactical movement of sword-wielding characters across grid-based environments. The series was Japan exclusive until 2003 when the series came to the West with the release of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade . Due to poor sales of the series, Fire Emblem Awakening was conceived as the final installment of the franchise. As a result of the record-breaking sales of the game and widespread critical acclaim, the series was allowed to continue.[1]
As of May 2023, the Fire Emblem series has sold over 20 million copies worldwide for Nintendo consoles , making it the best-selling strategy RPG franchise . In addition, Fire Emblem Heroes has shifted over 17 million mobile downloads and grossed over $1 billion in revenue, making it Nintendo's highest-grossing mobile game .
