Final Fantasy VII[]

FFVII was one of the first video games produced at a blockbuster AAA scale.[477] It was the most expensive video game ever developed up until then,[478] and its expensive advertisement campaign was also unprecedented for a video game.[479] It cost $45 million to develop[480] and $100 million for marketing,[481] adding up to $145 million budget, equivalent to $275,000,000 adjusted for inflation.

In Japan, Final Fantasy VII had a high level of anticipation in the months leading up to the game's release.[482] The Final Fantasy VII demo included with Tobal No. 1 helped push that game to the top of the Japanese sales charts,[482] selling 752,000 copies to become Japan's eighth best-selling video game of 1996.[122] In the weeks leading up to the release of Final Fantasy VII in January 1997, PlayStation consoles had sold out across Japan.[482] The game had over 1.1 million pre-orders about ten days before release,[483] increasing to 1.83 million pre-sales shortly before release.[484][482] On its first day of release in Japan, the game sold 1.75 million copies, grossing about ¥12 billion ($99 million).[482] In two days, it sold over 2 million copies,[485] grossing about ¥14 billion (£70 million) ($115 million).[482] Within three days of release, 2.3 million copies were sold,[486] setting the record for the fastest-selling game ever at the time.[487] Final Fantasy VII had a high attach rate, with the PlayStation having an install base of around 4 million in Japan at the time.[488] It was a killer app for the PlayStation, with Computing Japan magazine noting that it was largely responsible for the PlayStation's global installed base increasing from 10 million units sold by November 1996 to 16 million units sold by May 1997 (an increase of 60%).[489] The game sold nearly 3 million units by April,[490] more than 3 million by July,[491][492] and 3,447,500 units by August 1997.[493] The game helped push PlayStation sales ahead of the Sega Saturn in Japan, after the PlayStation and Saturn had been very close in Japan prior to the game's release.[494][495]

In North America, it was the most anticipated game at the time,[496] with its popularity inspiring thousands of retailers to break street dates in September to meet public demand for the game.[497][498] In the game's debut weekend in North America, more than 330,000 copies were sold and $16.5 million grossed ($31 million adjusted for inflation), which was higher than any video game (surpassing Star Fox 64 at 300,000 sales) and most Hollywood blockbuster movies to date.[498][499][487] Final Fantasy VII reportedly went on to sell 1.5 million copies in North America during its first week of release.[500] It helped the PlayStation break a long spell of Nintendo 64 dominance in North America;[501] the game topped the monthly sales chart[502] and entered the top three on the video game rental chart, the first time a PlayStation title entered the top five after months of Nintendo 64 games dominating the rental charts.[503] Business analyst Edward Williams (from Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co.) commented that "Sony redefined the role-playing game (RPG) category and expanded the conventional audience with the launch of Final Fantasy VII".[504] It held the North American opening weekend sales record up until Resident Evil 2 (1998),[487] and it was the highest-grossing Final Fantasy game in North America until Final Fantasy XV (2016).[505] Having sold more copies in the United States than in Japan, Final Fantasy VII is credited as "the RPG that single-handedly moved RPGs" from "niche" to "mainstream" in North America.[506]

In Europe, it set sales records in the United Kingdom, where in its first two days of release it had sold 48,000 copies and grossed £2.2 million ($3,602,000), faster than any video game previously released for the PlayStation, Saturn, Nintendo 64 or PC.[507] It also topped the UK sales charts.[508] In Germany, it received a Gold award from the Verband der Unterhaltungssoftware Deutschland (VUD) in August 1998 for sales above 100,000 copies.[509]

Worldwide, it was the best-selling video game of 1997.[510] It sold more than 6 million copies by 1998, becoming the best-selling PlayStation game up until then.[511] The PlayStation version went on to sell 7.24 million copies worldwide by 1999,[512] and 9.34 million units by March 2003, including 3.9 million units in Japan and 5.44 million units abroad[513] (with over 3 million in North America and over 2 million in Europe).[135] This made it the highest-selling Final Fantasy game[514][515][516] and the best-selling Square Enix title.[513] By the end of 2005, 9.8 million copies had been sold worldwide, including 4 million sales in Japan and 5.8 million sales abroad in North America and Europe.[517] By 2007, the game had sold about 10 million copies for the PlayStation.[518]

The PC version surpassed Eidos expectations of 100,000 units in 1998, exceeding sales of one million physical units.[135] More than 100,000 downloads were sold of the PSN version during its first week of release in 2009.[138]

Final Fantasy VII is credited as having the largest impact of the Final Fantasy series.[519][520] The game is credited with allowing the role-playing game (RPG) genre to gain mass-market appeal outside of Japan.[521] Role-playing games were a niche genre in North America up until Final Fantasy VII introduced the genre to a mainstream audience there,[498][522][523] and it is the first main-line Final Fantasy game to have been released in Europe,[524] where its success generated mainstream interest in RPGs.[525] It popularized Japanese role-playing games outside of Japan, in addition to opening up the game console market for Western computer role-playing game developers such as BioWare.[526] According to Gene Park of The Washington Post, FFVII "single-handedly put role-playing video games on the global map".[478] It also boosted sales of the original PlayStation,[489] and demonstrated the advantages of CD-ROM media over ROM cartridge media.[527] According to Sony Computer Entertainment founder and PlayStation architect Ken Kutaragi, FFVII was "a driving force that propelled gaming forward" along with the PlayStation, and the game contributed to growing global awareness of Japanese popular culture along with anime.[478]

Nintendo had Super Mario Brothers, Dragonquest, and Final Fantasy. And Sony PlayStation now has Final Fantasy VII, which has been selling like hotcakes since it was released at the end of January.
