Dragon Ball is a multimedia franchise debuting in the 1980s as a manga written by Akira Toriyama and published by Shueisha. There have been over 40 titles, with software sales of over 40 million units by 2014,[1] and 66.5 million units as of 2022, making it one of the best-selling fighting game franchises, best-selling RPG franchises and best-selling licensed game franchises.
The series was initial published by Banpresto and Bandai before they combined into Bandai Namco. In the West, the series did not see a proper game release until Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, and the series was under Atari until 2006, when Bandai Namco claimed the worldwide license. Certain sub-series have shown great results, like the Budokai series which has sold millions, and Bandai Namco has announced that the Dragon Ball Xenoverse series (Dragon Ball Xenoverse 1 and 2) have surpassed 14 million sales worldwide on all platforms. This figure includes both physical and digital copies.
The Japanese sales are sourced from Media Create, Famitsu,[2] and Shueisha.[3]
