In 1989, the video game industry experienced sustained growth from 1988.

The year's highest-grossing arcade game worldwide was Taito's beat 'em up blockbuster Double Dragon for the second year in a row. The best‑selling home system in 1989 was the Nintendo Entertainment System (Famicom) for the sixth year in a row. And for the fifth time in a row, the year's best-selling home video game was Super Mario Bros.
