In 1988, the video game industry reached its highest revenue since the 1982 peak. The arcade and home video game markets were thriving this year.

The year's highest-grossing video game worldwide was Taito's arcade beat 'em up blockbuster Double Dragon.[1] The year's best‑selling home system was the Nintendo Entertainment System for the fifth time, while the best-selling home video game was Super Mario Bros for the fourth year in a row.
