In 1985, the arcade industry began recovering from the video game crash of 1983,[1][2][3] while Japan's console market grew substantially due to the success of Nintendo's Famicom (NES). On the other hand, North America's home video game market was still suffering from the crash, before the market began showing signs of recovery with a limited release of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) towards the end of the year.

The year's highest-grossing video game worldwide was the arcade fighting game Karate Champ. The year's best‑selling home system was the NES (Famicom) for the second year in a row, while the best‑selling home video game was the NES release Super Mario Bros.

Financial performance[]

In the United States, annual home video game sales fell drastically in 1985 to a small fraction of its peak several years earlier.[4][5] The US home computer market also experienced a decline this year.[6][7] Meanwhile, the arcade game industry began recovering in 1985.[2][3][8]

The following table lists the annual sales and revenue generated by the electronic games industry in 1985, including video games and electro‑mechanical games. See sections below for breakdown of revenue estimates.

Japan[]

In Japan, the year's best-selling home video game was Super Mario Bros. for the Family Computer (Famicom), later known as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) outside Japan.[147][148] The game's success significantly increased the Famicom's user base.[149] By the end of 1985, more than 50 million Famicom game cartridges had been sold in Japan,[16] including more than a dozen Famicom titles that crossed 1 million sales each.[150][151]
