In 1984, the video game industry in North America was reeling from the video game crash of 1983 while the success of Nintendo's Famicom (NES) in Japan helped to establish console gaming in that market.

The year's highest-grossing video game worldwide was the arcade racing blockbuster Pole Position for the second year in a row, which was also the fourth time in a row for a Namco game. The year's best-selling home system was the Famicom (NES), which was only sold in Japan at the time, while the best-selling home video game was Nintendo's sports title Golf for the Famicom.

Financial performance[]

The video game crash of 1983 negatively impacted all segments of the US video game industry, with declining sales for console, arcade and computer games.[1][2][3]

The following table lists the annual sales and revenue generated by the electronic games industry in 1984, including video games and electro‑mechanical games. See sections below for breakdown of revenue estimates.

"The home computer market in Japan consumed 1.1 million machines last year and is growing modestly in 1985, but it remains essentially a game market. (...) The two largest producers of home computers in Japan—NEC Corp., which claims a 40% market share, and Sharp Corp., which claims 20%—do not use the MSX (Microsoft Extended Basic) system that Microsoft Corp. developed and has licensed to 18 other Japanese companies. Total MSX sales last year are estimated at 350,000 units. But NEC's best-selling 8801-MII is used mostly by university students and small businesses for bookkeeping or document filing; MSX users are overwhelmingly 15 years of age or younger—game fanatics."

The value of domestic shipments has recorded annual growth. Conversely, the volume of domestic shipments of personal computers stabilized at the 1,200,000-nit mark for four years beginning in fiscal 1984. However, this volume began to increase rapidly in fiscal 1988."
