In 1984, the video game industry in North America was reeling from the video game crash of 1983 while the success of Nintendo's Famicom (NES) in Japan helped to establish console gaming in that market.

The year's highest-grossing video game worldwide was the arcade racing blockbuster Pole Position for the second year in a row, which was also the fourth time in a row for a Namco game. The year's best-selling home system was the Famicom (NES), which was only sold in Japan at the time, while the best-selling home video game was Nintendo's sports title Golf for the Famicom.

Financial performance[]

The video game crash of 1983 negatively impacted all segments of the US video game industry, with declining sales for console, arcade and computer games.[1][2][3]

The following table lists the annual sales and revenue generated by the electronic games industry in 1984, including video games and electro‑mechanical games. See sections below for breakdown of revenue estimates.

The two largest producers of home computers in Japan—NEC Corp., which claims a 40% market share, and Sharp Corp., which claims 20%—do not use the MSX (Microsoft Extended Basic) system that Microsoft Corp. developed and has licensed to 18 other Japanese companies.
